You haven’t lifted a finger all day – and yet you’re exhausted
Does that sound familiar?
It’s not laziness. It’s mental load.
What is mental load?
Mental load is everything you carry around in your head.
It is remembering. Planning. Coordinating.
Who needs picking up? When is the next dentist appointment? Is there food for tomorrow? Has anyone remembered the gym clothes?
It is not always the tasks themselves that take up space. It is the constant responsibility of remembering them.
Why does it make you so tired?
When you constantly have to keep track of a lot of things, it can be hard to truly switch off.
Even when you are actually off work.
It can cause restlessness and make it harder to relax. The feeling of always having something you need to remember can be quite draining.
Who carries the most of it?
In many families, the mother ends up having more of the mental overview.
That does not necessarily mean she does more. Often, it is about her noticing more of the small things.
She thinks about what is missing. What needs to happen. And what comes next.
Many fathers want to take part in it. They just don't always see the same things.
That can create an imbalance in daily life. Not because anyone is doing anything wrong. But because one person ends up carrying more of what needs to be remembered.
What can you do?
Start by getting things out of your head.
When the whole family has the same overview, it becomes easier to share the responsibility.
- Create one common overview – so everyone can see appointments and tasks
- Establish fixed routines – so you don’t have to decide the same things every day
- Share the responsibility – whoever is responsible for a task must also remember it
- Talk about it – it’s hard to share something you don't talk about
It doesn't always have to be you
You don’t have to manage it all alone.
When the family shares the overview, there is less for each individual to remember.
That provides more peace in everyday life. And more room to just be together.
It is not about having a perfect everyday life.
Just an everyday life that feels a little lighter.
